In most places, water mains are located in the home, usually in a crawl space, basement, attic, garage, or other location right after the water line enters the home.  However, in some warmer places, water mains are located outside the home.  Sometimes these installations don't even use standard quarter-turn ball valves.

In these situations, we recommend installing an auxiliary valve in your home, immediately after the water main line enters your home.

Even though Guardian is designed to install over a variety of valve installations, some installations do not meet the physical requirements for installation.  Usually issues arise with having enough clearance around the valve (i.e. being far enough away from walls and other obstacles) and having enough space before and after a valve before a pipe fitting is used (i.e. being a safe distance away from elbows, T-intersections, couplers, etc.)  See the image for examples of unfortunately placed water main valves.

In these situations, we recommend installing an auxiliary valve after your existing water main, away from fittings and other obstacles that will interfere with installation.

Guardian is designed to only fit on standard quarter-turn ball valves from 1/2" to 1" in size.  If your water main is a gate valve or larger than 1", it will have to be replaced before you can use Guardian.
